Ray Ybarra Maldonado on Trustcasting: an honest conversation about immigration, fear and hope for our community

When we talk about immigration we often think of paperwork, files and complicated laws. However, behind every case there are stories, sacrifices and dreams. That’s why, when Ray Ybarra Maldonado was invited to appear on Trustcast Show, he accepted without hesitation. The episode was published on May 13 2026 and runs just over 33 minutes. This space, hosted by Zane Myers, is dedicated to intimate conversations with professionals who seek to build trust and generate positive change in their communities.

What is the episode about?

Throughout the interview, Ray shares his personal journey: how a young man born on the Arizona–Mexico border, who briefly dropped out of Stanford Law School to document armed Minutemen in the Sonoran Desert, returned to finish his degree and built one of the most influential immigration and criminal-defense firms in Phoenix; Ybarra Maldonado Law Group. This story serves as a starting point to address sensitive issues affecting our immigrant families:

  • The reality of raids and detentions. Ray explains what to do during the first hour after a loved one is detained and emphasizes that the belief that ICE only goes after “criminals” is a thousand percent false. Understanding the difference between detention and deportation and knowing how to act can make all the difference.
  • U visas and cancellation of removal. Many people are unaware that they may qualify for a U visa, a status designed for victims of crime who cooperate with authorities. Ray details the requirements—having lived 10 years in the U.S., having qualifying relatives and demonstrating “exceptional and extremely unusual hardship”—for requesting cancellation of removal and obtaining a path to lawful permanent residence.
  • Constitutional guarantees in immigration proceedings. Although immigration is often seen as separate from criminal law, Ray reminds us that the Constitution protects everyone. He explains why winning a motion to suppress evidence is not a “technicality” but a vindication of the Bill of Rights, and recounts the Miguel Angel case, where a strong defense against a workplace raid led to an acquittal on all counts and paved the way for the client to obtain his green card.
  • Common myths and misinformation. One of Ray’s biggest concerns is misinformation. Many people arrive in court afraid they will be deported that same day, which prevents them from defending themselves properly. He also addresses the false idea that after 15 years in the U.S. with U.S.-born children a person is “automatically protected”. Dispelling these myths is crucial so that families can make informed decisions.

Beyond legal representation

At Ybarra Maldonado Law Group we always say that we see people, not cases. This episode of Trustcasting shows why. Ray speaks about empathy, the importance of preparing without living in fear, and offering the community reliable information and support. In fact, his passion for his work has led the firm to have 50 staff members, 1 200 positive reviews and to be part of the civil rights lawsuit that helped bring down former sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The newsletter we shared recently sums up this spirit: “Real conversations. Real stories. Our community comes first.”No one should face these moments alone. Fear and uncertainty are overcome with truthful information, emotional support and a network of professionals who put their heart into every case.
